Dance is an universal language.
It transcends cultures, ages, knows no boundaries.
Dance is a human story, it can tell us who we are, where we come from, what are our traditions, rituals, connection to the sacred.
Dance is a way of expression, an identity.
Regardless of which language we speak, regardless of where we call home, we can all find a common ground through dance.
Through movements, we save words that perhaps others would not understand and instead establish a language that is familiar to everyone.
As a photographer, I tell stories.
Like dancers, I use no words and appeal to universal symbolism.
ROOTS is a project that has been living with me for a while and now is the perfect time to explore its essence and to make it happen.
Through a series of portraits of people dancing in direct interaction with the natural elements earth , air and water , I want to tell the story of humans.
Their connection to the visible and the invisible, what makes them unique and similar.
First series : Jan 2018, Utrecht, The Netherlands with urban Dutch dancer Roger van Kooij
